Edwin John Tanquist Jr MD 02/05/1932 – 09/16/2022

Edwin (Ed) was born on February 05, 1932 in Alexandria, Minnesota as the 3rd child of Edwin J Tanquist Sr MD. and Olive C (Johnson) Tanquist.

Ed graduated from Alexandria High School in 1950. He played trumpet in the band and orchestra for 8 years. He also played football, basketball, and golf during his junior and senior high school years, and was on the basketball team that went to the state tournament in 1950.

After high school, Ed attended the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis from 1950 until he graduated from the University of MN Medical School in 1957. Ed and Bonnie (Swensen) Tanquist were married on August 30, 1956 at the Congregational Church, Billings, Montana. At the time, Ed was serving 3 months as an NCO in the Coast Guard at the Crow Agency Hospital located in southeastern Montana, where Crow and Cheyenne Indians were served. They completed their respective colleges at the University of Minnesota. Their senior year, they had quarters at Anoka State Hospital, where Ed served as an admitting physician for newly arrived patients during nights and weekends, and finished medical school during the day. Bonnie continued her education, including teaching practice at various schools in the city. Ed and his wife, Bonnie, moved to Panama in 1957 where he completed his residency in general surgery and internal medicine. Their sons John and Bruce were born in the Canal Zone before returning to the United States in 1960. Ed then joined his father in Alexandria, MN in general medicine before welcoming their daughter, Faye, to the family born in Alexandria in 1961.

In the 1960s, Ed learned to fly airplanes adding several aviation certificates. He was a certified private, commercial and instrument instructor, for ground school and flight school. He had a single-engine, twin-engine, seaplane and skiplane rating. In 1967, he received the Mr. Aviation award for the state of Minnesota. During his flying years, Ed has also logged an impressive 492 parachute and skydive jumps.

Also, Ed and Bonnie were certified divers. They also enjoyed golfing, fishing, boating, water and snow skiing, and air and land travel.

In 2001, at the age of 69, Ed shot twice his golf age, a remarkable achievement.

Ed and Bonnie have been lifelong members of the Congregational Church. Ed was a member of the choir from elementary school through high school. Ed has been involved with the Junior and Senior Pilgrim Fellowship. Ed attained the rank of Eagle Scout and became a scout leader.

On Sunday July 18, 2010, Ed was confirmed at St Lukes Lutheran Church, Garfield MN. Ed sang in St Lukes Choir and particularly enjoyed the men’s prayer group on Wednesdays. His membership in St Lukes and his association with pastors, group studies and a men’s prayer group resulted in a deeper understanding of Jesus Christ and Christianity. He was also a member of the Golden K.

Ed is survived by his wife Bonnie, 66. his three children, John Tanquist, Bruce (Sheila) Tanquist and Faye (Mark) Westwood; two grandchildren Joe (Merit) Tanquist and Justin Tanquist; two great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Raelyn Tanquist. Sister-in-law Betty Swensen. He enjoyed spending time with many wonderful nieces, nephews and lifelong friends whom he treasured.

Preceded in death by his parents; Sister Joyce (Quentin) Dunnum, Sister Audrey (Robert) Kloehn brother-in-law Tom Swensen, daughter-in-law Collen Frey-Tanquist, grandson Connor Westwood, niece Bonnie Dunnum, nephew Robert Kloehn.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Garfield with the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements are with Anderson Funeral Home. www.andersonfuneral.net
